Truett McConnell University is a private Christian liberal arts and sciences university, operated under the auspices of the Baptist Convention of the State of Georgia and controlled by a Board of Trustees elected by the Convention.
The mission of Truett McConnell University is to equip students to fulfill the Great Commission by fostering a Christian worldview through a biblically-centered education.
World Mission Emphasis
The Great Commission, Matthew 28:18-20, is the guiding principle of Truett McConnell University. Each student who graduates from Truett McConnell University must complete the Great Commission Minor. In addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree in World Missions, a concentration in World Missions, Interdisciplinary Degrees with an emphasis on Missions, and the underlying vision of the administration to make it possible for every student to go on an evangelistic world mission trip, the university declares itself committed to equipping students to fulfill the Great Commission.
The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) of Truett McConnell University is entitled, “Fostering a Christian Worldview at Truett McConnell University.” A Christian Worldview is the foundation for the entire curriculum and student life of the university and is its raison d”être. It is at the core of everything the university does in education, athletics, and student activities. The university seeks to infuse every aspect of its ministry with a Christ-centered and Biblically-based worldview that will challenge any and all secular and/or post-modern worldviews with which students face.
Truett McConnell University is a liberal arts university offering Bachelor’s degrees in a variety of majors, concentrations, and minors, and a Master of Arts in Theology. The university is a growing Christian community dedicated toward merging the finest traditions of a liberal arts education with the growing demands for Christian professionals embodied in a curriculum that is Biblically-centered. Since Scripture is authoritative it is the yardstick against which every course and program of studies is measured. Truett McConnell University is limited by the *”authoritative nature of the Scriptures, and by the distinct purpose for which the school exists.” *The Baptist Faith and Message, Article XII.
2 Timothy 3:16
Since the school’s founding in 1946, Truett McConnell University has been an institution rich in a history of God’s provision and dedication to provide students with a biblically-centered education.
From its humble beginnings in a building that now stands as a hardware store, TMU stands today on more than 200 acres in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Northeast Georgia.
Because of the school’s distance from Southern Baptist seminaries, Truett McConnell’s original intent included training for pastoral ministry. Although the same focus is true, the liberal arts college now offers more than 27 programs of study, thus equipping graduates for religious and marketplace career paths that include: Missions, Christian Studies, Music, Nursing, Education, Exercise Science, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, History, Humanities, Psychology, Biology, Education, English, World Missions and more, as well as a master’s program in Theology.
Initially accredited in 1966 to confer two year degrees, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges approved the college to offer four year degrees in 2002. In December 2013, SACSCOC approved Truett McConnell to offer a Master of Arts in Theology degree.
The college’s enrollment history reveals growth spurts and declines. However, in 2008, trustees named Dr. Emir Caner as president. Since his arrival, the enrollment of about 450 has rocketed consistently upward in double-digit percentage growth.
