(Cleveland, GA) On Thursday, May 16, 2024, Truett McConnell University (TMU) announced that renowned surgeon and former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Ben Carson, will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming Gala celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Martha Rielin and Elizabeth Salmen School of Nursing.  The black-tie event will take place on Saturday, October 26 at Atlanta First Baptist in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at TMU offers a unique aspect by integrating a minor focused on the Great Commission. The program is designed to develop graduates who advance the profession of nursing and have a global impact on healthcare by modeling moral leadership and evidence-based practice, utilizing critical thinking and communication skills, and embodying the character and servanthood of Jesus Christ.

The purpose of the Gala is to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Rielin & Salem School of Nursing, honor those who have contributed significantly to the School of Nursing and raise funds for two new high-fidelity manikin-based simulators.

TMU President, Dr. Emir Caner, said of the event, “As we celebrate ten years of the Rielen and Salmen School of Nursing, we are, in reality, celebrating ten years of God’s faithfulness in raising up godly nurses who love the Lord deeply and love others unconditionally. And who better to speak this evening, in honoring our alumni and looking towards our future, than renowned neurosurgeon and Christian, Dr. Ben Carson. “

Dr. Carson served for nearly 30 years as the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkin Children’s Hospital and is considered a pioneer in the field of neurosurgery.  He has received dozens of honors and awards in recognition of his achievements including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  He has authored eleven books, including his newly released book, the Perilous Fight, and has been named by the U.S. News Media Group and Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership as among “America’s Best Leaders.” Dr. Carson was a presidential candidate in 2016. He is the Founder and Chairman of the American Cornerstone Institute, a non-profit focused on elevating policies and values around faith, liberty, community and life.

Dr. Heather Ayers, Chair of the School of Nursing, added, “We recognize the culmination of God’s faithfulness and sovereign hand, and we extend gratitude to our alumni, family, faculty, and our community partners in the continued support of our graduates.  Whether placed in our local community, inner city, rural landscapes or on foreign soil, TMU School of Nursing graduates are equipped to integrate Christian faith and values with compassionate care to share the love of Jesus, which is the most honored calling, to serve in the ministry of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).”
