Cleveland, GA (January 31, 2011) – Truett-McConnell College is offering two falconry courses this semester.
These are the only falconry classes offered at the college level in the United States. The course, Falconry: An Ancient Sport in a Modern World, teaches students about the history and ancient art of falconry. The classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:00-9:50 a.m. and 11:00-11:50 a.m.
The class is taught by Coach Buster Brown, TMC Women’s Basketball coach and a member of the board of directors for the Georgia Falconry Association.
According to the Georgia Falconry Association (GFA), Falconry is defined as the taking of wild quarry in its natural state by means of a trained raptor. The art of falconry is thought to have originated in either Asia or the Middle East about 4,000 years ago. The term “falconry” covers all trained birds of prey, not just the birds known as falcons.
If the public would like an up close and personal look, they’re invited to Buck Shoals on Sunday, February 6, 2011. This is an “Introduction to Falconry” class that Coach Brown has taught for the last six years for Smithgall Woods.
