Earlier this month, TMU’s Counseling Center hosted “Career Confidence,” a night focused on building student confidence in a professional setting. Through free headshots and conversations with business faculty, they were able to learn tips for professional growth. In a personal manner, students were able to write positive, encouraging quotes on a mirror, and grow in relationships through having fun in a photo booth.
Gideon Hendrix, Counseling Center Coordinator, noted that “January and February tend to be a time where people are discouraged about themselves. We are seeing a lot on social media about looking better, being better, reaching impossible goals, etc. This is usually very discouraging and can cause people to experience low self-esteem. The Career Confidence event was designed to help students boost their confidence in a healthy manner. We incorporated headshots, tips from business professors, a photobooth, and a mindfulness mirror activity to help students build their confidence in a healthy, holistic way.”
TMU’s Counseling Center has been deeply involved in a variety of events. At the start of the Fall semester, they hosted the Counseling Center Cookout, with games and activities outside the center to ensure that students would be comfortable at the center. Over the course of the Fall 2024 semester, they hosted “Coffee Conversations” during TMU’s weekly Campus Coffee, covering topics such anxiety, depression, and grief. The Counseling Center has repeatedly proved that mental health can be guided towards healing in fun creative ways, such as last fall’s Bob Ross Paint Night!
Just a couple of weeks ago, the Counseling Center hosted a movie night showing Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out.” Students gathered in The Nightly for a time of fellowship over popcorn and hot chocolate!
The Counseling Center’s involvement in student life is vital. They seek to connect with students in a safe, casual environment so that there is no hesitation in taking steps towards an actual counseling session. Gideon and the team plan events with the intention of destigmatizing mental health and helping students move towards healing and hope!
