Cleveland, GA – On October 15th, TMU Women’s Volleyball faced Appalachian Athletic Conference rival, Montreat College. Montreat’s volleyball team had lost everything in the midst of Hurricane Helene’s fury, so TMU athletics invited both teams, their coaches, and administration, to join them on the cwnter court to pray together before the beginning of the game.
TMU Athletics prayed for peace and comfort in the wake of the storm, and for strength for those facing this difficult season. They prayed for those effected physically, emotionally, and mentally. They thanked God for the sport of volleyball and how it brought the two teams together.
After the prayer, TMU Athletics shared Matthew 22:37-39, which says, “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” They noted that while the two teams were competitors on the court, the two teams are neighbors.
To demonstrate the community between the teams and the desire to aid Montreat College with recovery and rebuilding, TMU’s Vice President for Athletics, Jenni Shepard, presented Montreat’s Athletic Director, Garrett Jones, with a check to aid in their rebuilding, along with sending a van load of various athletic training supplies, which had been coordinated by athletic trainer Hailey Lewis.
TMU lost the match, but the evening was a beautiful time of supporting Montreat College and praying over their athletes as they navigate the days ahead.
