Cleveland, GA – Fifty members of Truett McConnell University’s Chorale and Jazz Band used their fall break to participate in concerts and mission activities across Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. The group performed at four churches and two schools, as well as participating in mission projects through intake counseling, clothing and food distribution, cleaning, landscaping, painting, and more at three mission centers in Panama City, FL.
Each center that TMU partnered with was unique in its ministry and students witnessed a variety of opportunities to share the love of Christ with homeless and transitional people living in the depressed areas of Panama City. Students worked diligently in their tasks and shared their testimonies when given the chance, and one person came to know Christ as a result of student testimony.
“While performing music and sharing in mission activities were the major reasons for the trip, this group achieved two additional goals which we believe were also impactful – they represented TMU with excellence and grace, and they became a family of fellow ministers of the gospel through song and action,” stated Dr. Ken Gabrielse, Dean of the College of Arts and Letters.
An evening spent on the beach turned into an unplanned night of worship. A guitar was brought, and it wasn’t long before everyone joined in singing. Students and faculty had the opportunity to pray over the young man who had set up their beach bonfire and were able to leave him connected with missionaries at the center.
“I have never seen such wonderful, compassionate students as the ones that went with us. They went out of their way to be helpful to faculty and kind to the people they met, and they were very bold in their faith,” Mrs. Kathy Duren, lecturer of music, “It helped faculty be drawn back to what is the most important focus – it was an encouragement to show us that there is a calling here and what we’re doing is making a difference.”
