Truett McConnell University (TMU) will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, February 24th at 2:30pm to celebrate the opening of the new Disc Golf Course on the university’s campus.
The ceremony will take place at the first tee box. The tee box is located behind Miller Building, near the steps that lead to the Cofer Library and the cross.
Disc golf, a sport in which players throw specifically designed frisbees, or discs, toward and into a chain link basket, began to take form in the 1970s, when “Steady” Ed Headrick, of Santa Cruz, California, modeled the game after ball golf (www.pdga.com).
The course is comprised of nine holes, designed to be a technically challenging course rather than a long course. The course begins behind Miller Hall and wraps around the beautiful TMU campus to end on the front lawn. This provides for a fun and challenging time as well as an invigorating walk around the natural campus scenery.
Truett McConnell sophomore Avery Dowdle designed the course which took roughly a year to complete from the idea conception to finish.
Andrew Leviner, Campus Recreational Coordinator, is thrilled to have recently installed this new course, and looks forward to spreading the word about the sport at TMU. “Whether you are a beginner or a veteran disc golfer, this course was built for all. The course is open for students and community players on a daily basis.”
“This course brings another outdoor activity to the Truett McConnell recreational program. This is something that can help students and community members stay active while enjoying the beauty of the northeast Georgia mountains,” said Leviner.
