TMC Names New Chair of Music Department
Truett-McConnell College, Cleveland, GA, is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. John L. Davis as chair of both the music department and the fine arts division of the college beginning August 1, 2008.

A native of Montgomery, AL, Dr. Davis is a magna cum laude graduate of Samford University in Birmingham with a Bachelor of Music Education degree.  Immediately he enrolled in The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, where he studied conducting and church music, graduating with a Master of Church Music degree.

After spending several years in the full-time music and youth ministry, he enrolled in the University of Georgia as a doctoral student.  While at UGA, Dr. Davis studied conducting with Dr. Pierce Arant and voice with Dr. Greg Broughton.  His dissertation has been used as a model for theoretical/analytical dissertations by subsequent doctoral students.  He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1994 with a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting degree.

Since 1983  Dr. Davis has been on the faculty of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC, as a professor of church music.  During his tenure there he formed Faithful Men, a touring male vocal ensemble that became a popular and in-demand vocal performing group and has recorded five CD projects.  Conducted by Dr. Davis, the group has sung at conventions, meetings, colleges, conferences and churches across the southern United States, as well as in New England and on a musical concert and mission tour to Zimbabwe, Africa.

In 2004 Dr. Davis became conductor and artistic director of Northeast Piedmont Chorale, a community chorus dedicated to bringing fine choral music to the piedmont area of North Carolina.  The group, in conjunction with the Southeastern Seminary Male Chorale, has presented several major oratorios and choral masterpieces with orchestra under the baton of Dr. Davis.
Dr. Mike Simoneaux, interim president of Truett-McConnell, stated:  “Truett-McConnell College welcomes Dr. John Davis, a distinguished and accomplished Southern Baptist church music educator, as the new chairman of the music and fine arts division of the college.  Dr. Davis brings with him extensive experience at both the seminary and college level, as well as years of experience leading church music programs in our local churches.  We welcome him to the Cleveland area and encourage the public to attend any of the programs presented by the music and fine arts faculty and students during the coming academic year.  Student inquiries about the programs of study in music are encouraged.”
