Roderick Bombard needed only one bucket to reach 1,000 collegiate career basketball points when he started in Truett-McConnell’s game against Emmanuel Feb. 2.
And within about two minutes after tip-off, the sharp-eyed Bombard drained a three-pointer — one of seven he had on the night.
“From the beginning of the season, I knew I wanted to reach the 1,000-point mark. That was a goal I set for myself,” said the shooting guard from Orlando, Fla.
“I want to thank Coach Mawdesley for the opportunity to play at Truett-McConnell,” Bombard said. “He gave me a lot of freedom on the court. He trusted me. Without his trust, I couldn’t’ve accomplished my goal,” the senior added.
“I am so proud of Roderick both as a basketball player and a young man,” said Wade Mawdesley, head coach of Truett-McConnell’s men’s basketball team. “He was a member of my first recruiting class, and he will leave a lasting benchmark both on and off the court for current and future members of our program. It is truly fitting that Roderick is the first member of the Truett-McConnell Men’s Basketball 1,000 point club. “
Majoring in sports management, Bombard plans to attend graduate school, eventually coach basketball, and later become a college athletic director. “I know that won’t happen overnight. I need work my way up,” he said.
As for life at Truett-McConnell, Bombard said he has some “great new friends in my basketball teammates. I have great memories, too. They will be with me for life, and I won’t forget them.”
