CLEVELAND, Ga. (TMCNews) — The administration, faculty, staff, and students at Truett-McConnell College (TMC) all mourn the loss of DeWitt Cox, who served as director of planned giving at the Cleveland, Ga., school.

Cox, 80, suffered a heart attack Aug. 25 from which he never recovered. He went to be with the Lord Sept. 1.

“One of God’s premiere statesmen has graduated to glory and now rests in the arms of his Savior,” said TMC President Emir Caner. “DeWitt was an ardent supporter of Truett-McConnell College and served as a consultant for us for nearly a decade.”

Cox’s ministry spans “more than 50 years as a pastor and denominational servant, and his legacy continues through hundreds of Georgia Baptists churches, our state convention, and perhaps most appropriately through his family,” Caner added. “While his pastoral spirit and prophetic voice will be missed greatly by so many, we celebrate God’s grace of a life well lived and the Lord’s promise found in Rev. 14:13: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on…that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.’ The Truett-McConnell family covenants with other Georgia Baptists to pray for DeWitt’s wife of 61 years, Edna, and the entire Cox family during this time.”

Frank Cox, DeWitt’s son, is pastor of the Atlanta-area North Metro Baptist Church, and is a TMC alumnus.

A resident of Hoschton, Ga., Cox pastored churches in Georgia and Florida for 35 years and retired from the Georgia Baptist Foundation in 1998, where he served as vice president for 14 years. He also served as a consultant to the Alaska Baptist Foundation. Cox was faithful in pulpit supply and had served as vice president for the Georgia Baptist Convention as well as a trustee of the Baptist Village in Waycross, Georgia. He was currently serving as a Trustee of the Georgia Baptist Foundation and working under the leadership of Daniel Moosbrugger at the office of institutional advancement at TMC.

“DeWitt Cox was a true Southern Baptist statesman,” said Moosbrugger, vice president for institutional advancement. “His investment in God’s kingdom work and people’s lives is immeasurable on this side of heaven. Truett-McConnell and Georgia Baptists will truly miss our beloved friend.”

A celebration of Cox’s life and ministry will be held on September 5 at 2:00 p.m. at North Metro First Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Ga. Dr. Frank Cox and Dr. J. Robert White will preside over the service and burial will follow in Hamilton Mill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all contributions be made to Truett-McConnell College in Cox’s memory.
