Bears golf team places third

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. (TMCNews) — Deven Broadaway shot a 68 at The Orchard Golf & Country Club April 2, and broke the Truett-McConnell College record by one stroke.
On April 3, he won the whole enchilada, logging a two-day, one-over-par 145 at the par 72 links outside of Clarkesville, Ga.
A red-shirt sophomore, Broadaway led his teammates to a third place finish overall in the 6th Annual Piedmont College Spring Invitational, an NCAA sanctioned tournament.
Bears Nick Poss and Nils Conway each shot a respectable 78 on day two.

The Bears logged a team total of 624 strokes, finishing behind second place Spartanburg College, 617 strokes; and Gordon College, event winners with 600 strokes.
With 20 teams in the tourney, Truett-McConnell finished ahead of Young Harris, Piedmont and Emmanuel colleges.
“It’s hard to describe what this means for our team, for Truett-McConnell, and for Deven, too. It’s just huge,” said Mary Holmes, TMC head golf coach.
“For one of our players to win an NCAA event has been my goal since I began coaching six years ago. Our next goal is for the entire team to win as well. And that’s coming,” Holmes told TMCNews.
Holmes noted some “mental issues” some team members have when they “come into the home stretch — the last few holes. We must learn to stay in the moment and not jump ahead to our final score,” she said. “This is a learning process, and we will have much to discuss next week. But for the next few days, we all will enjoy and be grateful for an individual win and a third place team finish.”
Broadaway was unavailable for comment as Truett-McConnell students are on Easter break.
