Communication is a fundamental part of being a human. God, who created the universe by spoken word, made His finest creation to speak. The Bachelor of Arts in Communication at TMU is designed to examine the role of verbal and nonverbal communication in human relationships. Communication involves storytelling, public speaking, writing, and understanding the basics of human interaction. The Communication degree at TMU is formed to equip students for careers in public relations, marketing, journalism, advocacy, and so much more!

Areas of study in Communication at TMU include human communication, public speaking, rhetoric and persuasion, intercultural communication, strategic communication, and digital media. From learning to use online platforms to understanding culture and society, the Communication degree opens doors for students to discover their own particular passions in the field.

Through projects and internships, students gain experience in online platforms, public speaking, and professional writing. Under the influence of professors like Dr. Barry McCarty, who has over forty years of parliamentary procedure experience, and Professor Samuel Thomas, whose background is in strategic communication and political campaigns, students have the opportunity to learn from professors who are gifted across the field with a call to educate the next generation of communication leaders.

Part of what makes a Communication degree from TMU special is the biblical worldview through which the classes are taught. Students grapple with current events, analyze change in communication technique, and learn to approach communication from the basis of Scripture.

So, what can you do with a degree in communication? The options are endless, and it largely depends on each individual’s interests.

Broadcast Journalist – reports news/stories through television, radio, and digital platforms. A broadcast journalist seeks to present interviews, boots-on-the-ground reporting, and additional research to the public in a manner that is clear and engaging. Strong writing and verbal communication skills are needed to excel in this role.

Columnist – a columnist is a journalist who writes and edits a scheduled column for a newspaper, magazine, or online platform. Columns are typically editorial in style and offer commentary or opinions. Columns can be humorous or serious in nature, and is a reflection of the individual tastes of the columnist.

Communications Director – a communications director is an executive whose responsibility is to oversee the internal and external communication strategies of an organization. The role is pivotal in shaping how a company presents itself to the media, employees, investors, and the general public. They often serve as primary spokesperson for the organization and shapes the voice and public image of the company.

Investigative Journalist – an investigative journalist uncovers and reports news stories that require a detailed search and information gathering. Their primary responsibilities include research, interviews, writing, and presenting stories that may be controversial or complex. Verification of information, handling sensitive subjects delicately, and staying up-to-date on developments is a must.

Marketing Manager – marketing directors promote businesses, services, brands and more. They oversee the developments of marketing strategies and development staff, analyze trends, and manage budgets. A marketing manager needs an extensive knowledge of marketing strategies, and their expertise will lead to increased brand awareness and profitability.

Press Secretary – a press secretary serves as the primary spokesperson and primary liaison for high-profile individuals and organizations, often in political or governmental settings. They manage media inquiries, write press releases, and organize press conferences and other media events. Press secretaries often manage crisis communication and develop strategies for managing press.

Public Policy Advocate – a public policy advocate works to influence public policy and legislation that aligns with the interests of their organization. The role’s skills include research, communication, and relationship building to advocate for policy and legislation change. A public policy advocate will coordinate campaigns to gain public support, lobby lawmakers, and stay informed in specific policy areas.

Social Media Manager – a social media manager is a digital marketing professional responsible fort the planning, development, and execution of a brand’s social media goals across various platforms. They are the online voice of the organization and foster community engagement and brand awareness.
