She was handing out food with Faith Lutheran Church. She’s been volunteering for four years. She also volunteers with Caring Hands Ministry.
Why is she doing this? “I’m doing this because it’s just the thing to do. People are struggling with the economy and they need food. If someone can help, they should.”
“We are here because we want to support our church, The Bridge, and to get free school supplies.”
“I am here to help because it benefits the kids of White County and other school systems. I just want to give back to the community.”
They had done dental screenings on 20 kids by 10:45 a.m.
Jena said, “Dr. Wall asked us to volunteer for the past three years. We partake in mission trips throughout the year through the state through Georgia Mission of Mercy and every year we take a mission trip to the Dominican. This is just a way for us to give back to the community.”
Velma said, “We want to benefit White County’s future leaders.” Velma has worked for Dr. Robbins for 28 years as receptionist.
Lori Rushing went to Dr. Robbins in 3rd grade and told him that she wanted to be an optometrist. Dr. Robbins gave her a job in high school and recommended her for the dental school at University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is now in her 2nd year. When asked why she is doing this today, she said, “one of the best things we can do is to find out that kids cannot see and to fix the problem. Vision can fix school problems and headaches. There is nothing like having a kid put on a pair of glasses for the first time and finally be able to see.”
