BREAKING NEWS: Truett-McConnell Approved for Master of Arts in Theology Beginning Fall 2014
TMC student places third at NATS
COLUMBUS, Ga. (TMCNews)--Ten voice students from Truett-McConnell College traveled to Columbus, Ga., for the Georgia National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) student auditions held at Columbus State University, Feb. 15-16.
Lauren Chancey, sophomore music major, placed third in her semi-final round.
Accompanists for the NATS student auditions included Adjunct Instructor Cathy Rogers, and two TMC music students: Kelsea Batson and Bethany Hammack.
The students competed in either classical or musical theatre categories.
Abbey Sellers, Thomas Johnson, and Jonathan Peacock represented Dr. Ben Caston’s voice studio.
Claire Collier, Kaylynn Crites, Kim McPherson, and Lauren Chancey represented Adjunct Instructor Chalis Montgomery’s voice studio.
Hannah Kennedy, Rebekah Huey, and Ian Temple represented Adjunct Instructor Benjamin Dawkins’ voice studio.
"One of the most positive aspects of the NATS experience is the opportunity for our students to perform with their peers throughout the state,” Dawkins said. “By performing in a demanding situation, they learn not only where they are in their development, but also the musical possibilities their technique offers them. It was so rewarding to see our students perform so well, and I'm very proud of their efforts."
Abbey Sellers, sophomore music major, said, "Singing for the NATS competition is a great experience. It has given me the ability to perform my repertoire, and get advice and encouragement from other voice teachers. NATS has helped me grow as a singer and has allowed me to create specific goals. All of the feedback that I've received has been beneficial for taking the next steps in my voice training. "
According to Caston, “Each week our voice faculty members teach students solid vocal technique that will serve them well as worship leaders, performers, and music educators. NATS is a significant part of the journey.”
The next NATS event will be in Nov., when Caston hopes to take twice as many students.
