Dorsey leads NAIA in scoring

Truett-McConnell's Dorsey
leads NAIA, Div. 1, in scoring

CLEVELAND, Ga., (TMCSports)— Anthony Dorsey, senior basketball player for the Truett-McConnell College Bears, leads the nation in scoring average at 27.6 points per game.

The Bears compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Div. 1.

"What Anthony has accomplished so far this season is monumental," said Bears' head coach Wade Mawdesley. "Even when drawing our opponents' best defenders, Anthony's shooting percentage is at 55 percent, and he's 18th in our division in that category. That statistic is commendable, too, because Anthony has attempted 330 shots, and the next closest player has shot only 175 times."

"Anthony is not just a one-dimensional player," Mawdesley continued. "He hits the three, takes you off the dribble, posts up, or dunks on you. He scores from anywhere on the court."

Dorsey said, "It feels really good to be at the top, but it takes a lot of work. I go to the gym early in the morning and between classes to work on moves. That way I can react to the way different teams play against me."

Crediting his teammates, Dorsey said, "I'm really not an individual player. Our freshmen are knocking down shots, too. Some teams run a zone defense against us, or they double-team me. When that happens, my teammates get open to score. And that takes a lot of pressure off of me."

Dorsey also credits Coach Mawdesley: "He's the main reason I'm in this position right now. He has taught me how to patient and how to recognize defenses. He's given me techniques I can use to get open and score. Coach has played a big role. He's suggested some NBA players for me to watch to see how they handle defenses. Coach Mawdesley has helped me take my game to the next level."

Though the Bears haven't won as many games as Dorsey would like, he said, "I want us to win more games. That would make being leading scorer that much better."

Mawdesley told TMCSports he is pleased with how Dorsey has developed as a scorer and a team player, and he invites the public "to come see the Bears and Anthony in action."

"I love the game of basketball," Dorsey said. "I am always going to play hard no matter what. And I want to play harder to give my team a chance to win more."
