Kevin Barnes Elected Circle K District Governor

Cleveland, GA (March 02, 2011) - TMC student, Kevin Barnes, was elected Circle K District Governor for the Georgia District on Saturday, February 19th. Barnes was voted in by the House of Delegates at the 2011 Georgia District of Circle K International Convention. The Convention was hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn at the Historic District in Savannah, Georgia.

Barnes first chartered the club at Truett-McConnell College in 2005. He became the charter president and was a two-time lieutenant governor as well as the district convention chair. Barnes declared to run for District Governor this year and was nominated by another Circle K member. He was then backed up by a second member.

Barnes ran against two other candidates and stood on the platform “Together we can, focusing on tomorrow.” With this, Barnes said he wanted to bridge the gap between Kiwanis and Key clubs in an effort to help the two clubs work together. The student experienced a lot of caucusing and campaigning as there were two division caucuses and a district-wide caucus. Barnes gave a two-minute speech in the House of Delegate before the delegates voted. After votes were counted, Barnes was announced as the new district governor for the Georgia District.

“I was very excited and nervous because I was elected by a group of my peers. I hope to see the Georgia District grow and flourish. I anticipate seeing membership grow in all clubs as we become an outstanding district like we used to be. I want us to make a difference, not only at TMC and White County, but for the children of tomorrow,” Barnes said.

The following Sunday, February 20th, Kiwanis’ Governor Pat Tritt installed Barnes and the new board. Tritt pinned Barnes, and there was a ceremonial passing of the gavel and governor’s banner from former District Governor Ashleey Davis. Barnes gave his introduction speech and thanked people including TMC staff member, Gloria Sutton, who has been his advisor since he charted the club at TMC.

While attending the convention, Barnes also received the 2011 Carolyn B. Richard Outstanding District Officer Award. Truett-McConnell also received the Healthy Project Recognition Award, the Most Improved Club Award, and first place in the Outstanding Club T-shirt Award. Other TMC students were also recognized during the convention. Tabitha Orr, club president, and Kaitlyn Lamb, club secretary, both won The John C. Thompson Distinguished Member Award. This was Truett-McConnell’s first district convention.
